Saving Is Good

February 18th 2007 03:31
There’s a long established way to think about finances; but, still one of the best.

If you are driving somewhere, you get a map. Here’s where you start the trip.. This is the road you take to get where you want to go.

To get somewhere financially, you draw a map. It is not set in stone, because life changes. It’s a guideline to help you.

There are lots of good guide books on learning how to take care of your money. You can browse at halfor ebay. Or the excellent Powellsor Booksor Amazon (And why should you pay full retail to learn about money when there are deals on used books, saving you cash?)

If one author’s style or ideas don’t appeal to you, look for another. It’s like finding a teacher you like. Some teachers are incredibly boring. Good grief, they could make sex dull....

So look for someone who’s style you like.

Amazon and Google have features that let you read a little of the book online to see how you like it.

But, while you are waiting for your book, here are some ideas to help you get started.

I like to see what I’m saving for. A car, house, boat, or trip.

Putting a picture, large or small, whatever works for you, somewhere where you’ll see it may help.

If you work for someone else, is there a direct deposit option with your employer; where a portion of your paycheck, before it’s ever in your hands, can go into a savings account?

If not, when you deposit your paycheck, can you set up automatic withdrawals into a savings account?

If not every week, how about every two weeks, or every month. You do what you can. Just so you start

And maybe you could start thinking about how much money you would like to have in a savings account in a year. Just for safety sake: the car breaks down, your company is bought out and jobs get gone, just the stuff that can happen in life.

How much would you have to save each month to get to that goal? Is your goal number $5,000.00? To save that much in one year you would have to save over $400.00 per month. If you can do that, great. To me it seems a little steep. But, if you don’t save anything, then what will you do when “life” happens?

Save what you can. Make it a routine. You’ll be glad you did.
