October Awareness Month
October is National Down Syndrome Awareness Month.
I have to admit that my own awareness of this illness stemmed more from watching the Life Goes On television show as a child and, more recently, hearing of Vice President hopeful Sarah Palin's baby with Down Syndrome than from taking the time to learn about the disease.
Upon learning that October was National Down Syndrome awareness month, I decided to increase my understanding of the illness.
The National Down Syndrome Society website boasts a heartwarming N.D.S.S. Times Square video. The seventeen minute photo montage set to instrumental music inspired me in ways that I cannot even express in words. The video also included some thought-provoking facts and quotes. Here are a few of my favorites.....
"There are over 400,000 cases of Down Syndrome in the United States."
"Down Syndrome is the most common chromosomal condition. It effects one in 733 Americans."
"I love being around people because I make them enjoy life."
"My abilities and talent mean more than my disability."
