Home Remedies for Illness
Uncertainty about the current state of our nation's health care reform has many American consumers concerned about the availability of their access to doctors and hospitals. There are also many individuals, yours truly included, who are self insured with limited coverage. The ever-increasing cost of health care has many of us looking for natural alternatives to over the counter and prescription medications, particularly when it comes to minor illnesses such as the common cold, allergies, acne and the like.
This morning I woke up with a sore throat. Having faced many sore throats before I knew that my first step toward feeling better was the tried and true rest and liquids that my mom always recommended. Several hours of rest, several glasses of water and a warm cup of tea later I am beginning to feel more like myself. I have, however, tried a couple of additional remedies to boost my immune system. I put a spoon full of honey into my tea and am eating an orange and trying to get up the nerve to gargle room temperature salt water as I type this blog.
Most health care professionals will tell you that you should use good judgment and common sense when trying home remedies. Herbal supplements, for example, can sometimes interfere with medications you are taking and can be dangerous to your health in large doses even if you are not on medication.
