Learning to let go
Some physical objects in our homes hold special meaning for us even though we do not use them on a regular basis. Often, however, these momentos of what used to be in our lives are tossed aside into the closet, attic, garage or another place where they are remembered only in our subconscious. In this case, it is important to ask ourselves some very important and tough questions. The following are some examples worth contemplating...
How important is this thing to me really?
If I treasure it so much, why can't I enjoy it?
Why am I really hanging on to this thing?
Will the memory associated with this object continue even if the object is not in my home?
Can someone else make use of it?
Are there positive or negative memories associated with this momento?
Am I really holding on to it out of a sense of guilt?
Do I need someone's help to let go of it?
If I cannot part with this item is there a better way to take care of it or display it?
Can this item replace another one that is currently in use in my home?
Getting rid of items you do not use on a regular basis is often a very difficult but often necessary task if you want to live clutter free. It might help to have the assistance of a close friend or relative who can provide a shoulder to cry on as you find new homes for the old objects taking up space in your house. You might also be able to find a more effective and space friendly way to store them such as converting VHS tapes to DVD format.
