Family Meals on a Budget
February 15th 2010 18:33
Do you remember those days when you had all the job security you needed, health insurance premiums were low, and a budget was a mere afterthought considered only after you splurged on a nice vacation or expensive outfit and then received your credit card bill? Do you think those were the best days of your life? Well, you may have felt more financially secure then, but living on less can inspire a creativity that can create lasting memories of joyous occasions for your family.
One such example that I remember fondly from my childhood is a family picnic. I grew up in a family that nearly always had supper at the dinner table. We weren't too concerned about using the correct fork or keeping our elbows off the table. Instead, we appreciated each other's company and talked about our days and occasionally enjoyed watching a family sitcom on television as we ate our evening meal. Although I enjoyed eating supper with my family, the one meal I looked forward to every week was lunch on Saturday. That was the meal when we had our traditional Saturday picnic lunch. We would treat ourselves to sandwiches, chips, a cola and a candy bar from a nearby convenience store and spread a sheet over the living room floor. We would all sit together, facing in a circle Indian-style and have conversations about what we enjoyed. No negative conversations were allowed at the Saturday picnic lunch, only positive, enjoyable ones that made us all laugh and appreciate the little things in life.
Why not have your own picnic lunch or come up with a fun, different creative dinner theme for your family to enjoy on a weekly basis? You may be surprised at the outcome.
One idea is to vary the routine, a technique that I have mentioned in my other blog. Another family-friendly meal idea is to make party food for supper. You may be surprised by what a little imagination and creativity can do for your meal time.
