How to prepare for a natural disaster
We live in a very uncertain world. A natural or man-made disaster can happen at any moment and with or without notice. That is why it is so important to have a ready-to-go emergency kit for you and your family, but how do you know where to start? That is why the Federal Emergency Management Association (also known as FEMA) created ready.gov.
The ready.gov website details a three step process of how to 1) get a kit for emergency situations, 2) Make a plan and 3) Stay informed. In addition to resources listed on their website, F.E.M.A. also has more detailed information packets available for download or in printed form by telephone request and airs public service announcements on television, encouraging citizens to be prepared when a disaster strikes.
Even with the list of suggested items available from ready.gov, creating your own emergency kit can be a daunting task for some people. It is important, however, to at least start. Some preparation is certainly more beneficial than none at all. If you need help getting a kit together, some companies also offer pre-made emergency kits. Beware, however, that these businesses earn money from your purchase and may include items you don't need or may not include items you do need. Use sound judgment and common sense whenever considering the purchase of a ready-made disaster emergency preparedness kit.
