Create a More Spacious Feeling Home
February 23rd 2010 17:50
Many of us feel that we can use more space in our homes. How do you create more space? Once you have created more space, how do you make your home appear larger inside than it really is? Below are my four favorite tips for accomplishing those goals.
1) Before you do anything else, remove and consolidate the clutter.
I have discussed this technique in more detail in previous posts. Here, however, I would like to offer some brief advice. First, remove trash from your home. Begin with table tops, counter tops, floors and other flat surfaces. Next, donate or sell items that you do not need. Things are just things. If they are not something you need they can always be replaced later if you really miss them that much.
2) Look at ways to re-arrange your furniture..
I recently rearranged the furniture in my living room and dining room. Simply moving things around made them both look much larger! You should also consider donating, selling or repurposing furniture that is not in use in your home.
3) Optical Illusion.
Things like mirrors or a different paint color can make a home appear much larger than it is. About.com's interior decorating channel has several tips and tricks for creating illusion with home decor.
4) An outside perspective.
When you have completed the first three steps, try asking a friend, family member or professional organizer or interior decorator to take a look at your house and offer advice. A fresh pair of eyes may have a different view of your house than you can imagine alone.
