Cutting Personal Expenses
The famous American political figure Benjamin Franklin once said that "a penny saved is a penny earned." Often in life our personal expenses consist not only of the large, unexpected expenses we never see coming such as the car breaking down or the house fire, but also small expenses that are more often than not silent but deadly destroyers of our finances. My challenge to you today, readers, is to find the expenses that are like leaky faucets in your life, slowly dripping but adding up over time to much larger amounts of money. Here are a few ideas to get you started.
Electricity
Take simple steps to cut your electric bill. Some power companies offer lower rates on electricity during off peak times of the day or night. Try waiting until then to run your dishwasher, washing machine and dryer if you can. Turn off the lights when you leave the room. Unplug your coffee pot, computer and other electric gadgets when not in use. Ask your local power company if they offer a home energy audit or other services to help you reduce your use of electricity. You may find them surprisingly helpful. Buy and install a solar power kit. There are a surprising number of ways that you can save money on electricity every month.
Food
Go to websites like www.couponmom.com which teach you how to find good sales and combine them with coupons to save the most money. Take advantage of coupon mom Stephanie Nelson's coupon database to learn how to combine coupons with sales and accomplish super couponing. Read my other posts related to food in this blog and my other blog. Prepare meals at home instead of eating out if it is more economically feasible to do so.
Convenience Items
Instead of purchasing a coke every day, buy a multi pack and bring your own. Bring your own lunch to work instead of stopping for fast food. Planning ahead is the key here. Find what works for you.
