Natural Cures From Your Kitchen

March 29th 2010 22:05
: Home Remedies for Illness
Uncertainty about the current state of our nation's health care reform has many American consumers concerned about the availability of their access to doctors and hospitals. There are also many individuals, yours truly included, who are self insured with limited coverage. The ever-increasing cost of health care has many of us looking for natural alternatives to over the counter and prescription medications, particularly when it comes to minor illnesses such as the common cold, allergies, acne and the like.

This morning I woke up with a sore throat. Having faced many sore throats before I knew that my first step toward feeling better was the tried and true rest and liquids that my mom always recommended. Several hours of rest, several glasses of water and a warm cup of tea later I am beginning to feel more like myself. I have, however, tried a couple of additional remedies to boost my immune system. I put a spoon full of honey into my tea and am eating an orange and trying to get up the nerve to gargle room temperature salt water as I type this blog.

Most health care professionals will tell you that you should use good judgment and common sense when trying home remedies. Herbal supplements, for example, can sometimes interfere with medications you are taking and can be dangerous to your health in large doses even if you are not on medication. If you have any doubts, please consult a health care professional before beginning herbal supplements or taking any homemade remedy treatments to cure what ails you, regardless of how natural they seem to be.

: How I Saved Money on Shampoo
My local Sally Beauty Supply store offers Salon sizes of Salon Care brand shampoo to the general public.

My husband and I visited our local Sally Beauty Supply in search of home haircut equipment and accessories last month. I had previously considered the store to be a retail outlet that catered to beauty professionals, but that day I discovered that several non-professional customers like us shopped in the store as well. As we looked around I decided it would be worth my while to join the Sally Beauty Supply Beauty Club at a cost of $5.00. The beauty club entitles me to some great discounts in the store. When I joined that day in February they also gave me a coupon for $5.00 off a purchase of $5.00 or more during this month (March).

Today I went back to the store and was elated to find that Salon Care conditioning shampoo, which I had seen during my February visit, was on sale for $3.99 per one gallon container. Each one gallon container is an eight to one concentrate and therefore can be diluted to make up to 8 gallons. When I do the math, that's a total of up to 16 gallons of shampoo for $2.98 plus sales tax after my $5.00 coupon. Now that's what I call a good deal!

A penny saved is a penny earned.

March 20th 2010 12:26
: Cutting Personal Expenses
The famous American political figure Benjamin Franklin once said that "a penny saved is a penny earned." Often in life our personal expenses consist not only of the large, unexpected expenses we never see coming such as the car breaking down or the house fire, but also small expenses that are more often than not silent but deadly destroyers of our finances. My challenge to you today, readers, is to find the expenses that are like leaky faucets in your life, slowly dripping but adding up over time to much larger amounts of money. Here are a few ideas to get you started.

Electricity

Take simple steps to cut your electric bill. Some power companies offer lower rates on electricity during off peak times of the day or night. Try waiting until then to run your dishwasher, washing machine and dryer if you can. Turn off the lights when you leave the room. Unplug your coffee pot, computer and other electric gadgets when not in use. Ask your local power company if they offer a home energy audit or other services to help you reduce your use of electricity. You may find them surprisingly helpful. Buy and install a solar power kit. There are a surprising number of ways that you can save money on electricity every month.

Food

Go to websites like www.couponmom.com which teach you how to find good sales and combine them with coupons to save the most money. Take advantage of coupon mom Stephanie Nelson's coupon database to learn how to combine coupons with sales and accomplish super couponing. Read my other posts related to food in this blog and my other blog. Prepare meals at home instead of eating out if it is more economically feasible to do so.

Convenience Items

Instead of purchasing a coke every day, buy a multi pack and bring your own. Bring your own lunch to work instead of stopping for fast food. Planning ahead is the key here. Find what works for you.

Free Breakfast Food March 23

March 19th 2010 11:28
: Free Pastry Day at Starbucks
What could go better with a made by hand Starbucks specialty drink than a fresh, delicious pastry? A free fresh, delicious pastry. That's right, no charge for the flaky goodness of the delicious pastry, but only if you purchase the handcrafted beverage that compliments the pastry so well.

Nothing is really free, right? Well, not usually. The marketing masterminds at Starbucks are trying to get your attention. More and more businesses are using advertisements such as the one I saw for this special offer in lieu of traditional marketing advertisements because in this down economy, nothing quite gets the attention of cash-strapped consumers quite like the word "free

: How to cut chicken breasts into cubed chicken
Making cubed chicken can be quite a challenge when the poultry is at room temperature. Here is how I make cubed chicken.

Step 1: Start with boneless, skinless chicken breasts or chicken tenderloins. How many you need will vary depending upon how much cubed chicken you want. I usually like to purchase a family pack because it is more economical

Organize Your Home to Save Time

March 17th 2010 15:48
: How To Save Time Cleaning
Many people, at least from my observation, view organization and cleaning as two separate entities altogether. In reality, however, house cleaning and organization go together like peanut butter and jelly. The more organized your home is, the less time your weekly cleaning routine will take. Why? Well, think about it logically. Cleaning up trash and putting objects in their right place are necessary before you can clean the furniture, fixtures, etc which are underneath the objects you are moving. Even if you do not put the objects away, you at least have to move them.

Below are some practical tips designed to serve the two-fold purpose of better organization and faster cleaning

American Money Mentality

March 15th 2010 19:08
: The dark side of money
The rat race of middle class living in America is all too familiar to many of us. We are constantly struggling to get ahead but just keeping up with the bills. Our goal is to avoid poverty and maybe, just maybe, one day make it into a better financial state. We dream of winning the lottery or receiving a huge inheritance from a long lost relative or some other financial windfall. At the end of the day, however, we find ourselves unhappy, exhausted and dreaming of retirement. It doesn't have to be this way, however. We can have a different money mentality.

The key, in my opinion, is to be thankful for what we have. I watch reality shows on television all the time that feature rich people trying to stay on top of the latest fashion trends and own the nicest houses. Nearly every one that I have seen seems absolutely miserable. It's still a rat race at the top, just a different kind of rat race. On the other side of the coin, there are Americans who fall below the poverty line. Many of them are single parents just trying to survive. Others are there because of different circumstances or lifestyle choices. There are those who are content living in poverty and those who are not. I think of the three income categories I have observed, however, I have personally seen more people who are poor and happy than I have middle class and happy or rich and happy. Why? My theory is that the poor people I have observed know that although money is an essential tool for survival. It is not all there is to life. There are many other important things in life

Save Money on Cosmetics

March 12th 2010 14:04
: Beauty on a Budget
As a woman I am constantly frustrated and dismayed by our society's emphasis on how a woman should make herself look beautiful. Although I normally enjoy shopping, I have to admit that I get a sinking feeling right in the pit of my stomach whenever it is time to purchase cosmetics. It seems like every time I turn around there is another commercial for a new better mascara that promises to make me look like the supermodel who is wearing it on TV. I have to admit that I have been caught up in the marketing hype from time to time, but now as I am getting older I am starting to learn that some products work just as well for me as others. I am also starting to realize that a less expensive brand may have a comparable quality when considered next to the brand that does all the advertising. Here are three of my secrets for saving on cosmetics.....

Secret #1: The Dollar Store Sells Eye Shadow.

Health Coverage for the Rest of Us

March 10th 2010 13:49
: How to Save Money On Doctor Bills
According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, the national unemployment rate was at 9.7% last month. Some local unemployment rates are even higher. When money is tight, many of us are forced to make tough choices. Our natural instinct is generally to start with the expenses that take the biggest bites out of our budgets and work from there. One of those big expenses is, unfortunately, health insurance.

I recently heard an advertisement for a health insurance company on television. They said that their premiums started as low as $100 a month. Since I am self insured I know that is a good rate. I cannot help but wonder, however, how many Americans are trying to decide between that $100 a month health insurance premium and having that money to put towards a mortgage or to put food on the table

: Unemployment and Student Loans
You worked hard, finally made it through college and, at last, landed a job. That job, however, was short lived for whatever reason, or maybe not. Maybe the downward spiral of the economy just made you the victim of corporate downsizing. Whatever the reason, now you are unemployed and still have that student loan payment looming over your head. Well, don't worry. There is hope. You just need to know what to do in order to give yourself a little financial breathing room.

One of my favorite websites for navigating the mayhem of student loan repayment is youcandealwithit.com, a service of American Education Services. It details several options for repaying student loans when you feel like you are in over your head. You can find them here and here. American Education Services also provides helpful tools for getting back on track with your repayment here

: Money For College
The current state of the economy is making an already competitive job market even tougher. Many Americans, myself included, are taking a hard look at our workplace marketability and choosing to return to school. Limited financial resources pose a challenge for many, however. That is why several men and women who are going back to further their education are in search of financial aid.

What many people do not know is that you should apply for financial aid as soon as you finish your taxes, if not earlier. This is especially true of grants which have a tendency to be depleted very quickly

Treehugger on a Budget

: Save the Planet and Your Budget
Most of us care about the limited resources in our planet. Not all of us, however, can afford to drive hybrid cars, install solar panels in our homes and the like. There are, however, small things that we can all do every day to reduce waste and pollution. Surprisingly enough some things can be beneficial to both the environment and our wallets.

Many of us have heard the slogan "reduce, reuse, recycle

Who manufactures generic brands?

March 2nd 2010 00:15
: Generic Brand Product Lines
Product prices for generic brands are less expensive than those for name brands. Have you ever wondered, however, who manufactures generic, private store label products?

Today I was thinking back to the Wal-Mart Great Value brand peanut butter salmonella recall of 2007. (Click here to read FDA FAQ about the recall). Some of the peanut butter was manufactured by Conagra Foods, the parent company of Peter Pan name brand peanut butter. Yet, when I visited the Conagra Foods brand name page, I could not find the Great Value brand listed as one of the products they produce
