Basic Budget

February 26th 2010 14:29
Having a budget can be more liberating than you may realize. A budget is much more than a bunch of numbers on a page consuming hours of your time. It is a tool to give you control of your money, not the other way around. A budget can show you where your money is going as well as where it should be going. It can help you plan for emergencies, pay your bills on time and even put a little money aside each month for that vacation you've always dreamed of taking. A budget can actually be your friend.

So, all this sounds great, but a budget is a lot of work, right? Actually, that depends. There are many different types of budgets. The key is to find the one that works for you. Below are some general tips to set you in the right direction.

1) Identify your financial weak points.

Most people, at least from my observations, use credit cards for impulsive purchases. Try going one month without using your credit card. Yes, I know it is hard, but it is also very enlightening. It can help you learn a lot about your financial habits very quickly.

2) Identify your financial strengths.

Can you smell a grocery bargain a mile away? Do you know where to find the best deals on clothes? What aspects of money and budgeting actually excite you aside from spending money?

3) Plug the financial leaks.

Financial leaks are like a dripping faucet in your bathroom. They may take small amounts of money, but those small amounts can really add up. Typically financial leaks are things like bank fees, late fees and impulsive small purchases such as candy bars.

4) Put it in black and white.

Simply having a "mental budget" isn't necessarily good enough. The mental budget can go right out the window quickly. Having a visual reminder written down can be very helpful in strengthening your financial resolve to stick with the budget.

Tired and Stressed? Read this.

February 24th 2010 18:55
Fatigue is a regular struggle for many of us - men and women alike.

For me being tired changes me in physical, mental and emotional ways. I am just not at the top of my game whenever I am tired. My personality suffers, which effects my relationship with my husband, friends and family. My mood changes. Even my desire to do both necessary and fun activities takes a hit. It seems like nearly everything in my life is, in one way or another, influenced by my energy or lack thereof.

Today I visited one of my favorite websites, webmd.com, to get some answers on what makes people feel fatigued. There I found an impressive list of seven causes as well as a slideshow link to twelve more. You can find the links here and here.

Personally, I have four main causes of fatigue that I have noticed.

Cause #1 Not getting the right amount of sleep.

I have always been taught that the experts recommend that most men get at least seven hours of sleep a night and most women sleep for at least eight. Personally, however, I function much better on nine.

Cause #2 Dehydration.

Our bodies are largely made of water and use water in many of their chemical and physical processes.

Cause #3 Bad food choices.

My body needs vitamins and nutrients to function at its best. Supplements help but are not the ideal substitute for natural nutrients.

Cause #4 Stress.

Stress can affect you mentally as well as physically. Even a few minutes of exercise and quiet time each day can make a huge difference in your overall stress load. It is easier to fit your workout into the rest of your life if you take a few minutes (or even a few seconds) at various points throughout the day to relax, take a deep breath and get in a few stretches, squats, some extra walking or another form of exercise. Your doctor can help you with exercise ideas. Please remember to use caution and always consult your doctor before beginning any kind of exercise program that might put undo strain on your body.

Time Management

February 23rd 2010 20:24
There are twenty-four hours in each day. When you are busy, however, those twenty-four hours can seem more like two. So, how can you get more done in a day? Read on...

Prioritize!

Yes, I know that it seems like you have about a million things to do, but what is really important? If you're having a bit of trouble getting started with a priority list, try writing or typing out a list of everything you need to do. Next, assign an importance level to each task ranging from one to ten, ten being ONLY the most important, essential, and time sensitive tasks on your list.

Determine what you need to have and/or do in order accomplish each task.

Are there certain supplies that you do not have on hand? Do you have enough time to complete the task today? Do you need someone else to give you something or do something for you before you can get the job done.

Make a game plan.

Make yourself a list of tangible and reachable goals and formulate a plan for getting them done within the set time frame. Remember, you are the boss of your time, not the other way around.

Find newer and more efficient ways to do things.

Here's an example...I have my debit card number on file with my local utility company. Now, instead of driving out to pay the bill in person, I simply call and let them know that I want to pay. Direct debit may also be an option for you. Just remember to deduct the amount of your debit from your checking account balance. I like to call in because it forces me to actually look at the bill, take action, and make a note of the deduction.

Ask for help.

Ask your husband, children, or a friend to help you find ways to get your tasks done. They may even be able to take over some of the tasks that you normally do yourself. Here is an example...when my sister and I were girls our mom would ask each of us and my father to each put away five things when we left the supper table. Doing so gave her a total of fifteen things head start on the cleaning process. Sometimes she would even let messier tasks such as cleaning the stove count as more than one thing. I made a game out of it, trying to get my five things put away before my sister even left the table.

Create a More Spacious Feeling Home

Many of us feel that we can use more space in our homes. How do you create more space? Once you have created more space, how do you make your home appear larger inside than it really is? Below are my four favorite tips for accomplishing those goals.

1) Before you do anything else, remove and consolidate the clutter.

Put Your Food Budget On A Diet

February 22nd 2010 01:26
I have mentioned in previous posts some tips for how to save money on groceries and meat, but I would like to tackle another big supermarket budget-buster here - convenience food.

Convenience food is like comfort food. Most of us think that we can't live without it. A long day at work or just a hectic schedule shuttling the kids back and forth to soccer practice, etc. can leave us feeling drained. it seems like our energy level is so depleted that we would just give up and get a pizza if the line wasn't so long. Sound familiar? Well, there is hope. Read on

Four Steps to Basic House Cleaning

February 18th 2010 16:59
A dirty house can seem very overwhelming, but you can view your household chores as tangible goals. If you work on one area of your home at a time, house cleaning can be simplified.

In my household there are four basic steps that I take to have my home functionally clean for everyday use. Granted, these steps do not make my home "company clean." They do, however, get my husband and I through each ordinary day

Family Meals on a Budget

February 15th 2010 18:33
Do you remember those days when you had all the job security you needed, health insurance premiums were low, and a budget was a mere afterthought considered only after you splurged on a nice vacation or expensive outfit and then received your credit card bill? Do you think those were the best days of your life? Well, you may have felt more financially secure then, but living on less can inspire a creativity that can create lasting memories of joyous occasions for your family.

One such example that I remember fondly from my childhood is a family picnic. I grew up in a family that nearly always had supper at the dinner table. We weren't too concerned about using the correct fork or keeping our elbows off the table. Instead, we appreciated each other's company and talked about our days and occasionally enjoyed watching a family sitcom on television as we ate our evening meal. Although I enjoyed eating supper with my family, the one meal I looked forward to every week was lunch on Saturday. That was the meal when we had our traditional Saturday picnic lunch. We would treat ourselves to sandwiches, chips, a cola and a candy bar from a nearby convenience store and spread a sheet over the living room floor. We would all sit together, facing in a circle Indian-style and have conversations about what we enjoyed. No negative conversations were allowed at the Saturday picnic lunch, only positive, enjoyable ones that made us all laugh and appreciate the little things in life

How to Save Money on Meat

February 12th 2010 18:28
Skyrocketing food prices, dwindling incomes and an uncertain economy have us all tightening our belts these days. One of the first places many people look when trying to trim their budgets is food, particularly meat.

Meat is an essential component of many American meals. Saving even a little bit of money on it each week can really add up, but how do you start

Clutter

February 12th 2010 03:40
The first step toward making your housekeeping routine much easier is to conquer clutter. If you are at all like me (I'm assuming that you are if you're reading this blog), then the shear mention of the word clutter can strike a rather unpleasant chord in your brain. It's a sinking, overwhelming feeling that so many of us have. Each of us, in one way or another, is asking, "but where do I start?" (And you thought you were the only one).

Well, I mentioned in my previous post a few clutter combating techniques, but I would like to add a couple more here which I have found to be particularly effective. I like to call them clutter clicks and trash torture

Are you feeling overwhelmed by clutter?

February 10th 2010 18:22
Do you feel like every time you turn around there is more clutter in your home? Do you feel like every time you organize something it's three steps forward and one step (or two or three steps) back? If so, you're not alone. Many of us struggle with having more stuff than we can handle. So were do you start when you're raining it all in? Here are some tips from my own experience:

Step 1) Put it in black and white

How do I?

February 4th 2010 19:08
Have you ever wondered how to do those basic housekeeping tasks that you just never learned growing up? Have you always had someone else doing your cleaning, grocery shopping, bill paying, etc., and now you're on your own?

The small, everyday tasks that many of us as women, and now even some men, have to do on a daily basis can be very intimidating if you have never had to do them before or never learned the proper way to do them
