Penny Smart - December 2006

Surprise!

December 29th 2006 15:33
I came across a new (for me) site, called Surprise

It’s a shopping site designed to help make your gift buying easier.

You can choose from categories, for Him, for Her, or narrow down even further: Manly Man, Metrosexual, Foodies, Movie Buffs, Gadgeteer, Loves Crafts, Unusual Sense of Humor, etc.

I saw potential gifts I didn’t know existed, which is very cool. Not necessarily the best prices. But, for inspiration, go here. Then go see, if you have time, if you can save money through bizrate or your preferred shopping comparison search engine.

Very nice to be surprised indeed, with genuinely new, fun things

Peace, Love & Lotsa Lobsta

December 28th 2006 14:42
I don't know why this just cracks me up, but it does.

I came across a website, Lobster Gram ], which has been in business since 1987. They ship lobsters (Livin' La Vida Lobsta'), other seafood, steaks, and more.

They are just so cheerful about their lobsters it's infectious. Don't miss the blog which has some great looking pictures of recipes using, natch, their food.

And, as they say, Peace, Love and you know......[/B

Half Price or Less

December 27th 2006 17:06

I was surprised to come across Half.com recently. This is a site ebay bought years ago, and at some point, said they were closing down.

Apparently not. The site has a cozy home page interface, like ebay.

Though the coziness is less apparent when things don’t behave according to auction protocol. ebay is enormous, and the rules seem to change on certain areas every 6 months. I must mention the horrors of trying to deal only online with customer service.

You may get someone helpful and knowledgeable, or not. I’ve experienced both. And no telephone customer service is available at ebay corporate - I tried. Odd, for such an otherwise well-managed company, don’t you think?

Anyway, half.com has a lot in common with Amazon’s auction site, which I used in years past for selling some items. And a nice shipping allowance for various items. After five minutes I couldn’t find the page describing fees, though the home page says there are no listing fees. That’s good. I think, if you’re interested, you’ll want to check out the help page. Right now, half.com is only available in the States. For international, they recommend (surprise) ebay.

Happy buying and selling.

Merry Christmas or the day before, or the day after, I don’t know. By next year, hopefully, I’ll know a little more about international time zones and holidays.

Sunday Christmas Eve

December 24th 2006 16:27
This Week, With George Stephanopoulos, is on tv in the background as I write this, on Sunday, Christmas Eve, in the States. The new UN Secretary General is speaking.

Not a terribly good night's sleep last night for me for a variety of reasons. Ah, the Holidays. And the melding of many personalities who happen to be family.

The Light, I See The Party Light

December 23rd 2006 19:24
Pennysmart.net is about living well (which means taking good care of the money that provides for us), but sometimes some money has to be spent to live well. Sigh...

So, here are some hints about serving those of your guests who don’t drink the potent potables during this season (or want a break in between drinks - see TodaysWorldfor ways to avoid, prevent, or mitigate a devastating hangover).

Party Tonight & No Fairy Godmother?

Something Borrowed, Something Blue............

In Seattle, Washington there is a company. BagBorrowSteal where you can rent an Yves Saint Laurent leather bag for around $65 per week. You can also rent gorgeious jewelry. Membership is $10 per month, usually (they have a $5 per month special right now) and some items you can choose to buy. Also, like Netflix, there is no late return charge (though you do continue paying the rental fee

Gifts & entertainment For Fashionistas

December 11th 2006 20:36
If you, or one of your gift recipients, love fashion, there are some clever internet options available to you now. You can see many of the the clothes and acessories from current telvision shows on SeenOn.com. This site lets you pick a show, and then buy cothes worn by a character whose style you like.

Similarly, there is Like.com At Like.com you pick a celebrity whose style sense you fancy, and the site shows you remarkably similar items at about one quarter of one percent of the price. Very nice.

Digital Christmas

December 5th 2006 16:07
I have a particular interest in this subject, since my grandson's efforts to give my Kodak digital camera a bath were successful.

The camera is definitely cleaner, though it no longer takes pictures. I bought the whole Kodak system some years ago, with the "docking" station that prints pictures immediately, and alot of other features. Pretty easy and convenient; just what I needed. People like me are the folks the manufacturer's are talking about when they say "point & click" consumers.

Digital Cameras

If you want some good plain-spoken advice on buying a digital camera, Good Housekeeping has a nice buying guide. I can't check this link, because I'm in the process of moving & the telephone companies are not co-operating with one another as promised, but, if the link doesn't work just "google" or "yahoo" good housekeeping buying guide digital camera.

Here's the link that might work.
